I agree. I'm not getting pop-ups now, but I was recently invited to download a "Java update" when I was on that bastion of English middle-classness, the Good Pub Guide website. Since that site has been flakey for a long time, I went for it. Big mistake. I then got so many pop-ups (on all sites) that the PC became effectively unusable and I had to send it away to be sorted out. The advice I got from the computer people was simply "don't download free software" (other than those which are part of the operating system which you bought with the machine), since much of the free stuff, although not a 'virus' as such, lets in all sorts of ads you don't want.

This site has never given me pop-up adds on any standard configuration. And today it still doesn't on either Firefox or Chrome. It must be something installed on your computer. There are these adware programs that attach pop ups to many different sites when installed.

Went on the site today, now in fact, and I'm getting porno pop-ups. This site was always good about pop-ups. What went wrong?
