It's an interesting question. My own website uses paid hosting, and the hosting cost has never been that significant, not even a tiny fraction of what it would need to be to justify placing advertising onto the site to recoup costs. Advertising of course would serve me no benefit as my site is far, far too boring to attract visitors!
However, some websites do allegedly generate so much traffic that advertising is required to offset the hosting costs. I have never seen the figures involved: hits per month, cost of hosting as a result, and the revenue generated from the advertising. Having this data would be interesting -- just how much of an expense are we talking about, and if it really is that high, what would I personally do if my hosting started to reach those figures? I would never involve advertising, most certainly!
The Internet is a strange contraption where everyone expects everything to be free, and then a portion of these people block the advertising that is paying for these services! I don't block advertising, but I do block Flash for security, and that does in effect put a stop to the most annoying adverts (those that generate sound).
(Pro-tip: wetlook and fountain pens don't mix. Well, they do ... and that's the problem.) |

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Sat 07/01/17 16:01:11 GMT To be honest, I'm amazed Tripod is still around. I just visited your site and found it to throw up a clickbait pop-under. That's reason enough to avoid visits to any Tripod-hosted site. Myself, I never used a free hosting site; I have self-hosted, and would rather do that or pay a hosting company than make content I chose to share hostage to all sorts of host-injected banners and pop-ups. It's an unfriendly experience for the visitor to either be subjected to that stuff or engage in a war of escalation between browser filters and ever more pernicious means to deliver ad impressions. If they want to charge you to host your content while continuing to inject all the obnoxious advertising, something is very wrong at Tripod.
Gary, you have some nice stuff; if you feel generous enough to share, I hope you can find a better solution.

By Gary Kay - Sat 07/01/17 06:57:52 GMT Website: A Wetting Album Hi, I have solved my Tripod problem. If there is anything you'd like to salvage from "A Wetting Album" Please do so very very soon. At the first chance I get I will be deleting the site,(most of it is already gone) problem solved. I am waiting for new passwords / access to my files, they want WAY too much money to keep my files in the new host. Might however happen that I will never be able to access the files, that be the case the site will remain as it is right now forever. It was a glorious ride, the first thing I ever owned that I was very proud of. First time I ever viewed wetlook photos, Dean Pearcy's wetlook site. I thought "I was the only one". That was 1995. Saved images, and created images with my wife for several years, one day I asked if she would mind if I posted a few images, she said yes, One day I asked if she would mind if I made a few videos "A Formal Affair" 2 volumes, she said yes. Seems improbable anymore to do things CUZ you want to without spending money, I have more important things to spend money on right now, a compromise between desire and reality. Ah well, all good things end yes? As always, enjoy.
