As a trivia point, Moore played Bond 7 times and after his 4th time he was getting older and he threatened to quit....and then the studio offered the part to Ian Ogilvy.....an actor who had reprised Moore's role as The Saint in the 1970's Return of the Saint series.....so if that had happened then Ian Ogilvy wold not only have followed Moore as The Saint...Ogilvy would have followed Moore as Bond as well.  I don't think Moore thought very highly of Ogilvy's portrayal of the Saint....and as soon as he found out they had offered Ogilvy the role of Bond to replace him, Moore dropped his threats to quit and decided to make 3 more Bond films...to deny Ian Ogilvy getting the role..

I would probably rank Roger Moore as being one of the best and most memorable Bonds of all time. My mom always thought Sean Connery was the best James Bond because he was also the first. And who really likes it when a favorite character is replaced with a different actor for no apparent reason? And unlike the Dr. Who series where the story actually had an explanation written in to explain away the use of different actors, there was no "official" explanation for the use of different actors for the James Bond character.

Anywho, I grew up in the 70s and for those times, I think Roger Moore was probably the "best" Bond for that time. He was a familiar face, and played a popular character previously, as Simon Templar. IMHO, James Bond just seemed to fit Roger Moore and I don't think there was another actor who could have followed after Sean Connery's depiction of James Bond. The downside was, Roger Moore had played James Bond a little too long and by the time the last few movies were made, he was pushing well into his 50s, which was probably too old to realistically play the character.

It looked like Roger Moore was a hard act to follow, because the following "Bonds" were just not as good nor as exciting. Timothy Dalton was boring and looked like he was trying too hard, playing Roger Moore's version of James Bond. And Pierce Brosnan might have actually been a really good James Bond, but I think it was too little too late. I recall that there was talk back when he was playing the popular character of Remington Steel, that he'd make a good James Bond, but he didn't actually get the role after several years after that series was cancelled, and by then it looked like his career had leveled off.

I actually like Daniel Craig's version of James Bond. What I'm not a fan of, is how the character has evolved. But this isn't the fault of the actor, but the writers who make up the back stories for the character. Other than that, there is more action and less dependance on gimmicks.

I'm not so worried if the character is actually played by a real Brit. It might be nice for patriotic reasons, but I never expect that level of authenticity from a movie…I don't expect for Leonard Nimoy be a real Vulcan, to play a Vulcan character on a TV show, nor do I expect that James Bond be a real Englishman, so long as the actor can play the part realistically.

Of course, I'm all about the wetlook scenes, and there were a few memorable ones. For my pick of "best" wetlook scene in a James Bond movie, I'd have to say it was this scene in "The Spy who loved me" :

I don't know why, but the image of the actress sliding down the tube with her skirt flipping up as she hits the water and the short underwater swim scene is a fav of mine…… I don't really care about the part where she is "eaten" by the sharks (which doesn't really happen) Too bad the scene isn't longer. I would love to see the outtakes and/or the behind the scenes footage, especially a scene of the actress climbing out of the pool after the shot, still in her clothes.

Well....you probably would not agree with my picks on Doctor Who either....i.e.

Best Doctor Who = Tom Baker

2nd best = David Tennant

Sexiest companion = Katy Manning

Most annoying companion = Catherine Tate

Ugliest companion = Pearl Mackie.

I never really considered Sean Connery right for the part of Bond because while he was a good actor Ian Flemng wrote Bond to be an Englishman and Connery, Brosnan and Lazenby are not English. Timothy Dalton was too bland in the role and Daniel Craig was way too violent for my tastes....so I liked Moore's tongue in cheek portrayal.

I guess I prefer tongue in cheek portrayals because the best Batman for me has always been Adam West and I don't like any of the modern Batman actors.

Roger Moore was a fine performer....even though he was never likely to win an Oscar, he ways entertained me.

R.I.P. Roger Moore

From one of your tweets: "Roger Moore - the greatest Bond of all"...

Most entertaining, definitely. Best Bond? I think Connery deserves that distinction; I'm sure some will agree with me and others will disagree.

Moore certainly leaves a wonderful on-screen legacy as Simon Templar (The Saint), Brett Sinclair (The Persuaders) and of course James Bond, among other screen roles. The Bond films in which he appeared were certainly spectacular for the grandeur of their settings and special effects, the lovely ladies who played opposite him, and, of course, the villains. But he never really seemed to take his role seriously - there was always the silly pun, wisecrack, moment of sheer absurdity, or fracture of the fourth wall. OK, maybe Connery did all of those things too, but as Bond, Moore took it to a whole other level. Always entertaining and thoroughly watchable again and again, just not "best Bond" IMHO.

One of the shoots we did in The Bahamas.

As you can see from the raw footage, we did lots of re-takes.
