It is now the 4th of July season. Time to celebrate the birth of America. One of the greatest traditions of the 4th of July is FIREWORKS! I love the pretty multicolored sparks, crackels, and whistles of fireworks. However, fireworks can be dangerous. You are literally playing with fire. Every year many people are injured by fireworks that are used unsafely and insanely by idiots. Be sure that you use only legal unmodified fireworks, follow instructions on each firework, and sit a safe distance away. However, even with the best of precautions, accidents can happen. Fireworks can malfunction, sending sparks shooting into what should be a safe distance away. Clothing and hair can catch fire if this happens. The best precaution against this possibility is WATER! Have water activities before your firewroks display. Make participation mandatory. Make sure everyone's clothes and hair are completely soaked before lighting fireworks. That way even a wayward spark that lands on someone's clothes or hair won't start a fire. If you have a pool, have everyone watch the fireworks from the pool. The person lighting the fireworks should jump in the pool after lighting each firework. If you don't have a pool, be sure to hose everyone down periodically during the show. I hope these safety tips help make your 4th of July a safe and sane one!
