I discovered the world of WAM and wetlook on the internet around 1995 - 20 years ago! At the time, I thought I had reasonably up-to-date (consumer) equipment - a 19,200 baud dial-up access modem. The first pictures I found were in postings on the alt.sex.wet-and-messy newsgroup. I still have many of those pictures. They are JPGs in the range of 20kB to 60kB in size, usually requiring about a minute to download each one (assuming the modem didn't fallback to a lower rate to maintain a connection - it often did). I remember paitently waiting several minutes sometimes for pictures to download. Of course, as newsgroup postings they had to be decoded to reconsitute the original JPG before they could be viewed. All very technical and demanding of patience in the time before web browsing took hold. All that effort made the few images very precious.

Today, we think nothing of images of such size, and usually enjoy images in the range of 200kB or larger. Looking to Erik's most recent post as an example, he routinely posts sets of 300k (or larger) images in-line, and it's usually no big deal. We even see in-lined video clips on many websites - unthinkable back when I first got on the internet. And it's all just point and click.

This comes to mind because it's been about 20 years for me, and because I just got a service upgrade to 40Mb (download). If you do the math, that's a speed improvement of 2,000 times! If I go further back, my very first experience at computer networking was around 1985 or so with bulletin boards, and a 300 baud modem (fairly common consumer standard at the time). From then to now would be a speed improvement of about 130,000 times! Using that 1985 equipment, one would have to wait about 3 hours for just one of Erik's free sample images to download, or about 2 days for an entire post!

As I said, time and technology sure have changed.
