On the day of the school carnival, there was a fantastic surprise for everyone, for in the centre of the grounds was a large plastic framepool about ten feet across and three feet deep, with a six-inch-wide wooden plank across the top, supported by a trestle at each end.
"To celebrate the school centenary this year, we have two special surprise guests", announced the headmaster Lord Wallywam Wetfield. "They have asked that their anonymity be respected until the tournament commences at 14:00 hours, but they are willing in the meantime to be known as 'Amy' and 'Sarah'."
"All students will have the opportunity to participate in a tournament ladder, located at the various sideshows around the arena; the four semifinalists each battling alternately with 'Amy' and 'Sarah' on the platform over the pool itself! The finalist shall win a major prize, which will be revealed later..."
As the carnival commenced, various students as well as former alumni (as this was also a reunion of past students) gathered around the various sideshows and attractions, which were laid out in several themed areas. To the north was the mediaeval zone, with its jousts and also its stocks where you could throw squishy tomatoes at the losers; to the east was the mystic zone, with tents and caravans containing various surprises; to the south was the tropical area, where you could eat pineapple pizzas and generally make a pig of yourself; while to the west was the pioneer zone, where you could ride horses, shoot each other with water pistols, and try and rob cardboard-cutout banks while defending yourself from arrow attacks. In the centre of the four zones was the pool, adjacent to which stood two masked females each wearing an Alice-in-Wonderland outfit.
"Hey, look over there," said Twillin, one of the school's former students. "Isn't that Buf..." "And can that be Ev...", replied Neptune...
