...which seems to keep resurfacing.
If one were to draw comparisons between this forum and "the other wetlook forum", both the problems and their solutions become obvious.
The policy here is to remain open - no membership required; at the "other forum", you have to subscribe (yes, it's free, but the subscription process ties members to email addresses).
The policy here is to moderate as little as possible - to allow for free expression; "over there", moderators are constantly monitoring for abuse and rule infractions.
Of course there is one other significant difference which I suppose one would have to call "editorial policy". It is pretty much a separate issue although the candid pictures allowed by this forum's policy seem to incite a significant volume of negative posts. The "no candid" policy "over there" does seem to eliminate a good deal of negative posts, at the expense of some rather interesting content.
Here, we get occasional flame wars, anonymous posters hurl insults, and in general, very little time passes between various examples of bad or questionable behaviour. On "that other forum", everyone seems pretty well behaved, and what infractions may occur are addressed very promptly. All in all, a very "nice" place (it all depends on what you call "nice"). I'm not aware of anyone ever being banned. Either those inclined to cause trouble simply don't bother to go there, knowing they can't get away with it, or the moderators are very swift, effective, and discrete in their actions.
By the way, I have my doubts that pleading with the anonymouses will have any effect on future behaviour.
Conclusions:
o Moderation works, but only on the right sort of forum i.e. membership required or "closed". o Membership mechanisms are an effective way to discourage and/or deal with troublemakers. o If you allow anyone and everyone the freedom to express themselves, sooner or later they will say something you don't want to hear.
I'm not advocating either forum - open or closed - simply pointing out that each has its benefits, and with each you pay a price - you just have to live with it.

In reply to Message (23063) Forum Rule 4.2 - Some thoughts
By Andrew - Sat 17/06/06 13:30:27 GMT I've been on this forum since 1998 (back then it was on Bravenet, then Nigel made a new one for us) and I must say I don't like the way the Internet is going based on this forum. The number of contributores has increased, but not much. Many of the old ones where offended to many times and left. I always was a looker, contributed only a few times, with just a few of my own sets and some finds. But I NEVER posted negative comments and I can't understand why people here are so mean. Even the best photos get less then 10 (and usually only 2-3) positive comments. But negative comments, against rule 4.2 can be found on every page of the archive in large numbers, though Nigel despite his jobs tries to delete them. I mean people, hit yourselfs in those dumb heads before flaming someone! People like different things and diversity is important and keeps this forum going. So the next time when one of you wants to post some of the following... turn of your PC instead and go to a fountain, make some photos, put them up on Webshots, post the link instead. It can easily be done everywhere in the world, with the possible exception of Saudi Arabia, so it's really hard to find an excuse not to ;-P
PLEASE stop posting the following - goes especially to Anonymouses or half-Anonymouses:
-> "bad quality" posts -> "boring" posts -> "not my kind of clothes" posts -> "fat girl / whale" posts -> "i think they are underage" posts - because in 90% of the accusations they are not -> "this is porn" posts - because in 90% of the accusations it is not -> whining about sponsors posts etc.
This forum has more then 2000 users and only some 50 contributors among them. And many more flammers. Get a grip people. The net IS NOT THE place to let your frustration run with you. If you don't like a post, just DON'T POST ANYTHING.
I know I can't bring back the atmosphere of the end-of-the-90s mostly free and happy-go-lucky Internet, but still, if this post stops one troll from posting a negative comment I still think it's worth it.
Andrew.
