1998 is still a long time ago in video terms. Back then it was all about Intel Indeo, especially Indeo 5, and classic MPEG. I remember that Windows Media Player would, by and large, just download any codec you needed on the fly. For Macs, I did need the Indeo codec extensions for QuickTime.

If all else fails, first off, what are the file extensions? I am guessing they're AVI containers with unknown codecs inside.

I tend to stick with CCCP, but I don't have any old videos now, that could potentially suffer from missing codecs. Media Player Classic's File > Properties dialog lists both the audio and video codecs in use, but I'm not sure what it does when the codecs are missing. I think VLC has a similar dialog that lists the codecs. I know that missing codecs yield a dialog full of incomprehensible nonsense, so maybe the player is only able to list the codec name once it's found the matching codec and asked the codec for its name? I'm surprised that there would be so many codecs that the player can't keep a list of them and actually tell you what you need!

Curious... I had thought I had some clips which were older than 1998, but I just checked, none of mine seem to date earlier than 1998 either. Nevertheless, there are clips which used to play in older players/operating systems, but don't now. I guess I'll have to look into that suggestion about video conversion software.

What do you mean by old clips? I'm using the current VLC player and have never had any problem with any clip, current (among less supported formats like flv or mkv) or anything old (1998+ i don't have older stuff...).

I've been rummaging around my collection of video clips and found that a number of clips from years ago are no longer playable with current players.

I'm using Windows Media Player (version 11), VLC player (version 2.0.6) and Zune.

I am finding that some clips will play in any player, some will play in at least one player but not all (this applies to new and old clips), and some older clips will not play in any player. It's obviously due to codecs - having the right codec in the player for the file. What I'm wondering is whether there is either the option to add "legacy" codecs to one of these players, or if there is some other player that will operate on a relatively current PC (Vista) that can use the appropriate legacy codecs to play these old and otherwise unplayable clips.
