I have no idea why this is. I don't have many old clips, maybe the ones I have just use a codec that is easily obtained nowadays. I use the same version of VLC, however on Windows 7. I checked Windows Media Player and many don't work. But this is normal for the Windows player. Despite downloading many "plug-ins" that promised to work I never got my Windows Media Player to play either .flv or .mkv files which are so common nowadays. It always either refuses or crashes.
Have you tried a conversion software? There are many around, some free of charge. And try to convert the avi/mpeg (or what time you have) files to .mkv or .mp4? My friend who is better at this then I am says it may work in conversion programs though it doesn't in players. The new files can be played of course. However he thinks that you must try to convert them to a file of the new types, as above, and not a newer file of the same type, as this may not work, as well as converting avi->mpeg or otherwise. Stick with converting to newer formats and it should be fine. |

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Tue 11/06/13 01:02:42 GMT Curious... I had thought I had some clips which were older than 1998, but I just checked, none of mine seem to date earlier than 1998 either. Nevertheless, there are clips which used to play in older players/operating systems, but don't now. I guess I'll have to look into that suggestion about video conversion software. |

By Phoenix_Mike - Mon 10/06/13 23:28:43 GMT What do you mean by old clips? I'm using the current VLC player and have never had any problem with any clip, current (among less supported formats like flv or mkv) or anything old (1998+ i don't have older stuff...). |
In reply to Message (58146) Old clips and playability
By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Mon 10/06/13 17:23:48 GMT I've been rummaging around my collection of video clips and found that a number of clips from years ago are no longer playable with current players.
I'm using Windows Media Player (version 11), VLC player (version 2.0.6) and Zune.
I am finding that some clips will play in any player, some will play in at least one player but not all (this applies to new and old clips), and some older clips will not play in any player. It's obviously due to codecs - having the right codec in the player for the file. What I'm wondering is whether there is either the option to add "legacy" codecs to one of these players, or if there is some other player that will operate on a relatively current PC (Vista) that can use the appropriate legacy codecs to play these old and otherwise unplayable clips.
