I don't really have a preference for lighter or darker backgrounds. I don't see a pro or con with either and I can shoot in both . To me, the background has to complement the image, and not distract from it. Sometimes the background is darker and sometimes the background is lighter, the key to good photography is to draw the eye to the subject. Here are a few examples;

We shot this image one day with Lesley Ann somewhere in the south Caribbean

Now here is a similar shot. Same model, similar pose, same location, but shot at night;

As you can see there is an entirely different atmosphere, but in both cases, be it bright or dark, the emphsis is placed on the model.

The pro and con of lighter vs darker backgrounds is like anything related to photography, you have to draw the eye to the subject and get the right exposure.

Here is another example;

We shot this image with Luna during a heavy rain storm at night. To capture a night shot while it was raining, I had to set up lights to capture Luna, but I also wanted to show the rain, so one of my strobes was set up to backlight the scene.

Basically it all depends on what you want to capture. In the previous example, the shoot was pretty much spontaneous. I had a willing model available when it started to rain, so we took advantage of the situation and did that shoot.

The background can provide the atmosphere or context of the image, or it can just be nothing. We've shot against plain backdrops before. Sometimes the backdrop was black and sometimes it was white. Theres no real pro or con to it, but personal preference

Sincerely EdR

A question to producers - do you prefer lighter or darker clolored set backgrounds for your photography or videography.

I have no special preference just for me a lighter background feels more warm, cheerful, bright. What are the pros or cons of darker or lighter backgrounds? (reflections, overall brightness of the scene, etc.)

Examples of what I mean: soakingwet.co.uk as mostly a dark background, eewetlook mostly lighter backgrounds.

Many thanks for your reply.
