Thanks for the story, Laszlo. Though I was surprised, perhaps even slightly disappointed, that a wetlooker such as yourself felt you couldn't sit in a restaurant with clothes wet from rain. The British climate being what it is, it is not uncommon for people here to be seen in public places in clothes which are wet as a result of an unexpected shower. Everybody present will have been aware of the rain and will understand the cause of the wetness, whereas somebody's reason for wearing women's clothing - or for wearing clothes which visibly don't fit - is much less obvious. Anyway, clothes dry quite quickly if you keep them on, and cease to look obviously wet to somebody more than a metre or so away after about 15 minutes, whereas women's clothes look as much like women's clothes at the end of the meal as they did at the start! So if the choice of clothing is to be based on what other people in the restaurant might think, I would have made a different decision to you, Laszlo.

But I guess I have been surprised by the number of wetlookers in recent posts who have talked about changing clothes after swimming (or assuming that other people that they see in wet clothes will be going to change them). For example, I agreed 110% with post 700728.8 from an Anonymous flying an English flag, except for the phrase "before going to get dry". Most people I see getting their clothes wet on a sunny day on English beaches don't "go to get dry"; they go to get on with the next thing they want to do, trusting their clothes to "get dry" by themselves. I could tell you numerous stories about that; but it is perhaps best summed up by the fortysomething Indian lady who stopped for a chat as she came dripping out of the sea at Margate with her two daughters, all fully clothed; she said they loved the sea and came swimming every fine weekend; when I said (tongue in cheek) that it must be a hassle bringing a complete change of clothes for everybody every time she looked utterly astounded; "why would we bother with all that?" she said "we dry naturally".

Keeping clothes on and walking about in the sun is the very best way of drying them quickly (assuming you don't have a handy tumble drier); if you take them off and put them in a bag they won't dry at all. I never take a change of clothes when I go to the beach (though I do take a thickish fleece which I keep dry in case needed to ward off the evening chill), and regularly go into restaurants, pubs, buses or trains half an hour or so after coming out of the sea; I never have a problem and there is rarely any sign that anybody has even noticed the wetness. I myself know that my clothes look a bit different from when they are fully dry, but the other people there don't know what my clothes are 'supposed' to look like, and anyway why would they care?

The next piece of writing is not classic Wetlook, as there is no swimming in it, nevertheless you may find it interesting to read. If not, I apologise.

When I was young, a director friend of mine had visitors from England: two teachers of a medical secondary school (nursing school), young ladies, and maybe three schoolgirls. I was their interpreter for a week, and one day I invited them for a dinner in the centre of the town. We agreed that we would meet in their hotel. My house was for at least half an hour’s walk from it, and on my way, all of a sudden, there was a fierce deluge, like a tropical downpour. It would have been downright impolite to be late, so I kept walking, and got totally drenched in almost no time. However, I was not the only zany pedestrian in the street. A pretty, young woman might have had some similar appointment, or could not care less, because she did not mind getting soaked at all. She was quite a sight in her wet clothes clinging to her nice figure.

You can imagine that I arrived at the meeting as if I had just emerged from a pool. Our guests gave me a hearty welcome, and I took a warm shower immediately. As I would have been quite a spectacle in dripping clothes, we had to think up some solution. A student, a short and rather chubby girl gave me a pair of trousers, and a teacher a very feminine blouse. I am of an average height and rather skinny, so you can imagine how I looked like in the too short and huge trousers. In the primary school we had a Hungarian expression: “like a cow wearing a pistol holster”. Nevertheless I did not care a bit, the company was really enjoyable. We had such a good time together that ladies even asked me to buy the platter of the restaurant on which the food was served. I simply forgot about wearing not conventional clothes.

I know that some of you are in favour of cross-dressing, and some of you are dead against it. I myself do not take sides in this question. It did not bother me at all to spend an entire evening in women’s clothes, but I don’t think that I would enter a Dirndlflugtag event in a Dirndl. However, I understand the men who do. Feel free to attach your viewpoint.
