The most bizarre example is one that I see when watching train cab ride videos, filmed with a GoPro or equivalent. We have inductor magnets placed between the rails ahead of signals (the trackside portion of AWS), and as you approach a signal, these magnets can be seen jumping forwards and backwards! Somehow the camera gets horribly confused about what it’s basing its frames on, or possibly, the conversion process during upload to YouTube gets the frames mixed up. I don’t know how such a hideous bug arises!

Yes I have indeed noticed wetlook clips (including those that I have purchased) where the encoding rate is too low for the amount of activity in the scene.

Another mistake that some producers are prone to is not configuring the camera’s white balance, so you get very yellow scenes (ruins all the colours), or scenes that switch between white and yellow as the camera adjusts its own idea of white balance.

Another massive problem (used to plague Liquid Ladies) is dynamic range: the human visual system can accommodate a much larger range of intensity than conventional 8 bit/channel computer video. Liquid Ladies outdoor pool videos often had the reflection from the pool overload the camera and the models ended up very dark.

I bought some stuff just the other day only to be surprised by some quite disappointing video quality.

Purchasing wetlook is basically a form of gambling. Will the model turn out to be as attractive as you were led to believe? Will she soak her hair (or fulfil whatever other preferences you might have, such as wet socks)? Photo and video quality is another one. You pay your money and hope for the best, and I find myself fairly often disappointed.

It’s just a stopgap (30 years and counting) until such time that I ever get to experience it with anyone in person. In person, you can see so much more clearly, in close-up, 3D, high dynamic range …

I realise that this is probably my pet peve, but I was prompted to finally write this after seeing this problem on a few websites, namely the blockiness of videos. Maybe it is just me and others do not care about this. To illustrate, here is a screenshot from one of the videos on WAM.TV:

Not wanting to go into deep technical details, in my humble opinion, this is a result of quick sloppy and inefficient encoding jobs by the producers, which in complex water/pool scenes with a lot of motion of models and water surface produce blocky videos, shower videos are usually OK, as they are less complex scenes with less motion.

Alongside WAM.TV, you can spot this on Waminstyle also, which - to add insult to injury - uses a 20 years old, obsolete and inefficient codec (Divix). I wrote him an email pointing this out, but I have never received a reply. Also Elena Sochi suffered with the same malaise, again, no reply.

This way, the producers just sabotage their own work by publishing videos of subpar quality. For me Werfoto is the gold standard with sharp and buttery smooth 4k videos, which others should aspire to emulate.

Technical corner - for those who want to go into deeper details:

In my opinion, those producers use constant bitrates or variable bitrates with not enough overhead for high motion scenes. This probably saves them time needed for encoding the videos, but at the cost of encoding efficiency and blockiness. Furthermore, Wamnistyle used the outdated Divix, which is not as good with motion as the newer standards.

In my experience, quality based encoding would provide better results, as it would give the high motion scenes higher bitrates, but would save bitrate on less complex scenes of videos, which could result in videos without blockiness, which could maybe result in some circumstances in smaller files then the current ones, but with higher perceived quality. Though it probably takes longer to encode.
