In my young ages I try to jump in with a tshirt after I got a hamburger at the big indoor pool and find out no one cares so after that I took clothes with me to swim with.

But now we talk about 1998-2002 or somewhere there around, rules are changed in Sweden and now they say no cotton in the pool....so polyester clothes like a long sleeve

polyestertshirt and leggings....even swim with training pants in polyester and a shirt in another indoor pool.

Great times....great memories.....

They know me very well at that pool now...but not all of the lifeguards are still there either.

I have belonged to two fitness clubs, L.A.Fitness when I lived in London, and Fusion-Lifestyle now I live in the East Midlands. Both were/are very tolerant of my swimwear choices, and I have swum in kaftans, ankle-length trousers, leggings, long dresses, minidresses, jackets, teeshirts, etc. in their indoor pools. And with one exception no other members have ever objected, in fact when I first wore an umbrella (long hippie) dress at Fusion, the lifeguard smiled at me :) The one exception was when I jumped in the pool at L.A.Fitness in my gym kit after working out in the gym (I did take a proper shower first, as I always do) and some random Darren/Karen moaned at the staff who in turn moaned at me, it didn't bother me, as I just changed my top and went back in the pool. Neither club allowed denim in the pool, or other heavy cotton such as velvet or corduroy, which again doesn't bother me because I always tend to dress non-binary (dresses and kaftans) everywhere (including walking down the street), and I also find that denim / corduroy takes too long to dry in comparison to manmade fabrics (polyester, nylon, rayon, viscose, etc) which also clings better in the water. I even swam in a wedding dress once at Wavelengths (Deptford, South London) at the 1999 Millennium Pool Party :) I even walk down the street in full drag (including a wonderful long pink gothy wig and wedgie sandals) and I get nothing but compliments from random women ("you look fab" etc), although occasionally the occasional Darren shouts "poofter" as Society still regrettably contains gender-prejudiced instances. I have also walked home without changing after swimming, with no comment, as unfortunately manmade fabrics don't tend to look all that wet after about half a mile, but they dry quickly enough not to be a problem if it suddenly gets windy. The current pool I swim at 3 times a week only disallows "long and flowing clothing" (for safety resasons) and heavy cotton (such as denim) and shoes, the first to avoid getting tangled with other swimmers in the same lane, and the others for hygiene. I neatly overcome the first by velcro'ing my long umbrella dress to the side of my leggings so it doesn't float up under my arms like Ophelia, but stays more streamlined but still swirls and twirls around me sufficiently to be exciting. Fuller writeups of my clothed swimming experiments can be found on Janet and Julia's Forum ( //tinyurl.com/janetjulia ). What experiences have you had swimming at fitness clubs in clothes? It looks like clubs don't really care from a pool point of view (the whole "oh it's bad for the filters etc." discussion), but mainly that other customers complain. I can definitely see on Yelp that people are concerned about hygiene when somebody works out and then jumps in the pool in their sweaty workout clothes. My favorite outfit for swimming are jeans, T-shirt and a long-sleeve T-shirt. That's obviously more clothes than your usual workout outfit, so I assume people are even more concerned about me. Unfortunately they don't know that I always wash all my clothes beforehand eliminating any hygiene concern.

I recently tried a few clubs with varying results. First visit I asked at the front desk if clothes are ok and the attendant just nodded. Had a nice swim and nobody said anything. A week later I went back and asked again at the front desk (different attendant). He said he would have to check with his manager. When the manager joined she first said no, because of concerns for other visitors. When I pointed out that I wash the clothes beforehand she almost said yes, but last minute decided to check with the reginal manager. That verdict came back as a final no. Club #2 said straight out no. Club #3 said it's fine at the front desk and I did my swim. After ~20min somebody from the cleaning crew came over and told me I can't swim in jeans and t-shirt and that a couple of people had approached him about it. When I pointed out that I had checked with the front desk and that the clothes are freshly washed he said it's fine then and even apologized for interrupting me. I have a feeling that future visits will end up with another no over time like club #1. I would love to find a fitness club where I can go consistently with long opening hours as a backup to the community pool where they never care about clothes.

Anybody tried something similar? Has anybody worked at fitness clubs and seen how this topic is addressed internally? Would love to hear your insights!
