Kinda highlights what's wrong with social media. People doing the most extreme things for views and likes and the associated ad revenue.
Example: There was a guy who crashed a plane... a thrill-seeker bought an old-ish plane, mounted a bunch of GoPros on it, strapped on a parachute and took off. He faked an engine failure and bailed out, letting the plane do as it will (you don't bail out of an airplane just because the engine quits - you glide it down to the safest spot you can reach). He went to the wreck site to both recover the GoPros to make his video, and gather up the wreckage for later disposal. All this violated numerous aviation regulations and environmental laws, and endangered public safety. As a consequence, he lost his pilot's license and is now facing legal consequences... all for social media likes, etc. BTW I believe the video was fairly promptly removed or de-monetized, so his poor judgement netted a substantial negative reward.
We inadvertently reward this nonsense when we view/like/share these sort of videos. Social media is great for content that has true benefits, but too often it's just trying to appeal to our most base, prurient interests. |
